Heel pain is a common cause of pain in adults. It is most common between the ages of 45-64 and it is 2.5 more likely in females. It is often caused by damage to the tendon that sits along the bottom of the foot. This can occur due to a change in footwear, a change in exercise habits or poor foot posture.
Symptoms can include a sharp pain under the heel (it can almost feel like a stone under the foot), pain when walking for too long and pain on the first few steps in the morning. A lot of people with heel pain dislike walking in bare feet. There are other causes of heel pain that can be disguised as plantar fasciiitis, such as Morton’s Neuroma. As the differences are quite subtle, a diagnosis from a healthcare professional is advised.
Thankfully, Physiotherapy is well placed to help with heel pain. As Physiotherapists, we take a deep look as to why you are in pain, whether that be a movement issue or something else. Once we have found out exactly what is causing your pain, we can formulate a treatment plan to fix the problem.
