Reformer Pilates for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Class

Thinking about trying Reformer Pilates?

If you've seen Reformer Pilates on social media, heard friends talking about it or walked past a studio and wondered what those machines actually do, you're not alone.

Reformer Pilates has become an increasingly popular way to exercise, offering a combination of strength, control, mobility and coordination.

But if you've never tried it before, the equipment can look a little intimidating.

The good news? You don't need to be incredibly flexible, super strong or experienced in Pilates to get started.

Here's everything you need to know before stepping into a Reformer Pilates studio for the first time.

What exactly is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a form of exercise performed using a specialist piece of equipment called a Reformer. The machine includes a moving carriage, springs, straps and a footbar.

By adjusting the springs and your position, the Reformer can provide different levels of resistance or assistance during exercises. Unlike traditional mat Pilates, which primarily uses your body weight, the Reformer offers a wide range of movement possibilities.

Exercises may be performed lying down, sitting, kneeling or standing, depending on your experience and the class.

What are the benefits of Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates can be a great addition to an active lifestyle.

Build strength

The Reformer uses adjustable spring resistance to challenge your muscles. Exercises can target your legs, glutes, abdominal muscles, back, shoulders and arms. Over time, regular practice can help develop muscular strength and endurance.

Improve mobility and flexibility

Many Reformer Pilates exercises involve controlled movements through a comfortable range of motion. This can help you explore movement, develop flexibility and improve your confidence in different positions.

Develop balance and coordination

Reformer Pilates encourages you to pay attention to how your body moves. Coordinating your breathing, positioning and movement can challenge your balance and body awareness.

Enjoy a different type of workout

If you find traditional gym sessions repetitive, Reformer Pilates offers variety. Classes can combine slower, controlled exercises with more challenging strength-focused sequences.

Is Reformer Pilates suitable for beginners?

Yes. Reformer Pilates can be adapted for beginners, provided the class and exercises are appropriate for their needs. A good beginner session should introduce you to the equipment, explain the basic movements and help you feel comfortable.

You won't be expected to know the exercises beforehand.

If you have an existing injury, are pregnant, have recently had surgery or have a medical condition that affects exercise, it's important to tell your instructor before class. You may benefit from individual advice or a physiotherapy assessment first.

What should you expect during your first class?

Your first Reformer Pilates class is about becoming familiar with the equipment and learning how to move safely and confidently.

Your instructor should explain how the Reformer works, demonstrate the exercises and guide you through the session.

You may practise movements such as:

  • Footwork using the footbar

  • Controlled leg exercises

  • Core-strengthening movements

  • Upper-body exercises using the straps

  • Mobility and stretching exercises

Some movements may feel unfamiliar initially, but coordination often improves with practice.

Remember, everyone starts somewhere.

What should you wear to Reformer Pilates?

Comfort is key.

Choose fitted or comfortable exercise clothing that allows you to move freely. Avoid anything that could catch in the equipment. Many studios require grip socks for hygiene and traction, which we do sell in the studio.

Bring water, and arrive a little early so you have time to settle in.

How often should beginners do Reformer Pilates?

There's no single perfect frequency. For many beginners, one or two sessions a week can be a manageable starting point, depending on their goals, fitness level and other activities.

Consistency is often more useful than doing too much too soon.

As you become more familiar with the exercises, you can adjust your routine to suit your needs, which is why we've created three memberships to ensure there's something for everyone.
