Hip and Knee Replacement in Lithuania
Orthopaedic Surgery
Getting surgical care in the UK can be a long and frustrating process, with waiting lists for hip and knee replacements often stretching into months.
According to recent statistics from Hertfordshire, people may have to wait up to 3 years for hip replacement surgery and 2 years for knee replacements.
Whilst, at The Carter & George Practice, we will always try and help you with non surgical treatments, including physiotherapy, exercise and (if required) pain modifiers such as a steroid injection – sometimes surgical intervention is required.
We are proud to be working with NordOrthopaedics, based in Kaunas, Lithuania.
Who are NordOrthopaedics?
NordOrthopaedics is the leading orthopaedic surgery clinic in Lithuania, providing state of the art hip and knee replacement services. The highly experienced team of medical professionals have been treating for over 20 years, using the latest technological advances to ensure outstanding results.
They specialize in hip and knee replacements, as well as other arthroscopic and reconstructive surgeries.
Initial Consultation with NordOrthopaedics

The Current Situation of Healthcare in the UK
In the UK, long waiting lists for hospital treatments are common. According to recent figures from NHS England, there were over 4 million people on hospital waiting lists in 2020, with an additional 330,000 waiting longer than 18 weeks for their treatment.
This is the highest number ever recorded and has been caused by increased demand on services due to the pandemic as well as chronic underfunding and staff shortages.
This has led to more individuals looking for alternatives and opting for private healthcare instead of enduring long wait times for treatment.
An opinion poll commissioned by BBC Scotland suggests that one in five people who responded have paid for private medical care within the past year, either for themselves or a family member. This indicates an increase in individuals seeking alternative solutions instead of sitting on long waiting lists.
The majority of respondents to the opinion poll (73%) expressed a preference for using the NHS for medical treatment. However, with long waiting lists and increasing pressures on the system due to the Covid pandemic, travelling to Lithuania for orthopaedic surgery such as hip and knee replacement is becoming an increasingly attractive option.
Private Medical Insurance vs Self-Funded
Although if you have private medical insurance we would still recommend seeing UK based surgeons, we have recently had clients of ours flying to Lithuania for surgery, who have reported fantastic results at a fraction of the price (hip replacement in Hertfordshire is now £15,000+ for self paying patients). For reference, hip replacement surgery with NordOrthopaedics starts from £3,300. They also had their initial consultation, flight and surgery within 10 days.
NordOrthopaedics sees around 40 people from the UK each month.
