Hip Pain

The hip joint is one of the most stable and strong joints in the body, whilst offering large amounts of movement. There a many different injuries that can occur at the hip, including hip arthritis, hip bursitis (otherwise known as gluteal tendinopathy or greater trochanteric pain) and hip impingment. A reported 20% of adults will suffer from hip pain each year.

Hip pain can either be from the hip joint, where there can be some wear and tear involved or a bony structural issue – or from the gluteal tendons, where they become overused, weakened and inflamed. Symptoms of hip joint pain can include deep groin pain, catching and stiffness; whereas hip tendon pain symptoms include pain lying on the side, painful to touch and pain when standing up from a seated position.

Thankfully, Physiotherapy is well placed to help with hip pain. As Physiotherapists, we take a deep look as to why you are in pain, whether that be a movement issue or something else. Once we have found out exactly what is causing your pain, we can formulate a treatment plan to fix the problem.

Some of the techniques for hip pain treatment include:

Whilst the success rate of these treatments is high, occasionally we struggle to get a break through. We offer Hyaluronic Acid Injections and Corticosteroid Injections which offer both pain relief and joint lubrication and can have long lasting results. If you are interested in exploring these further, please speak to your Physiotherapist.

Usually, with a structured treatment plan, you can expect to see results within a matter of weeks – and most people experience and improvement in their pain immediately.
